The guide

The San Diego business guide to IT and security.

6 min readBy the Alpiba teamUpdated October 15, 2026

On this page

Good IT support and cybersecurity in San Diego should feel almost boring: laptops that work, accounts only the right people can open, backups that actually restore, and a real person who answers when something goes wrong. Getting there takes more than a helpdesk number, and the expectations of insurers, customers and auditors keep rising.

This guide is written for owners and operators of growing businesses across San Diego County. It covers what a managed IT and cybersecurity partner really does, the signs you've outgrown your current setup, the security baseline every business here needs in 2026, the local risks worth planning for, and how pricing and the first 90 days work with us.

What a managed IT and cybersecurity partner actually does

A managed partner runs your technology the way a good facilities team runs a building. Most of the work is routine, scheduled and invisible, which is exactly why the rare emergency gets handled calmly instead of in a panic.

Instead of billing by the hour after something breaks, the partner is paid a predictable monthly fee to prevent problems, watch for threats and support your people. At Alpiba, IT and security are planned and run as one system by one accountable team, so nothing falls into the gap between vendors.

The rhythm of managed IT and security
CadenceWhat happensWhat you notice
Around the clockA human-staffed security operations center (SOC) monitors devices, sign-ins, email and cloud appsA call or message only when something needs you
Day to dayUnlimited helpdesk tickets, new-hire setups, access changes and vendor follow-upsQuick answers from engineers who know your setup
On a scheduleSecurity patching, backup checks and documentation updatesSystems that stay current without weekend fire drills
Every quarterA restore drill, plus a business review of risk, roadmap and budgetProof that recovery works and a plan you agreed to

That rhythm is the heart of our managed IT and white-glove support. It is also the clearest difference between a partner and a technician you call when the Wi-Fi drops.

Signs it's time to get help

Few companies go looking for IT support and cybersecurity in San Diego during a quiet week. The search usually follows a scare, an insurance question nobody could answer or the departure of the one person who knew every password. These earlier, quieter signals are worth acting on first.

  • Your IT person, or the office manager covering IT, is on call every night and weekend
  • Nobody can confirm that every account uses multi-factor authentication (MFA)
  • Backups run, but nobody has tested a full restore recently
  • A cyber insurance renewal or customer security questionnaire stumped you
  • Former employees or contractors might still have access to email or files
  • IT costs swing from month to month because support is billed by the hour
  • Hybrid staff connect from home networks and personal devices with no checks
  • Growth plans, such as a hiring push or a second location, are outpacing your systems
Not sure where you stand?

If two or more of these sound familiar, take our free security health check. Ten questions show which areas to fix first, and your answers stay in your browser.

How Alpiba works, from first call to fully protected.

The 2026 security baseline for San Diego businesses

Many attacks on small and mid-sized businesses aren't sophisticated. A stolen password, a convincing fake invoice or an unpatched laptop is often enough. These six controls close the most common doors, and they are what insurers and larger customers increasingly ask about.

  • MFA everywhere. Multi-factor authentication means a stolen password alone can't open an account. Enforce it on email, remote access and every admin login, then add zero-trust identity security so access also depends on device health and context.
  • Managed EDR on every device. Endpoint detection and response (EDR) watches laptops and servers for suspicious behavior and can isolate a device before ransomware spreads. Traditional antivirus alone misses much of what modern attacks do.
  • Email security and domain authentication. Filtering catches malicious links and attachments, and SPF, DKIM and DMARC records make your domain much harder to impersonate. Email remains one of the most common ways attacks start.
  • Immutable, off-site backups. Immutable means a copy can't be changed or deleted, even by an administrator, for a set period. Ransomware goes after backups first, so you need immutable backups with restores tested every quarter.
  • Patching on a schedule. Operating systems, browsers, firewalls and business apps all need regular updates. Known flaws that never get patched are among the easiest ways in, and a documented schedule is what insurers want to see.
  • Training that sticks. Short, regular lessons and realistic phishing simulations teach people to pause before they click and to report what looks wrong. Trained staff catch what filters miss.

Behind all six sits monitoring. Tools raise alerts around the clock, and someone has to read them at 2am on a holiday weekend. Our cybersecurity and ransomware defense pairs managed EDR with a human-staffed 24/7 SOC that averages under 15 minutes to first response, and triggers a documented containment playbook within the first hour of a ransomware or breach event.

IT realities that are specific to San Diego

Security basics are universal, but how they play out here is local. These regional realities shape how we plan IT support and cybersecurity in San Diego.

Hybrid is the norm

A large share of the region's workforce splits time between home and the office, from Carlsbad to Chula Vista. Identity, device health and secure remote access now matter more than the office firewall.

Fire season and power shutoffs

Santa Ana winds raise wildfire danger, and SDG&E can call Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) when risk is high. Cloud-first systems, battery backup for network gear and a written plan keep work moving when an office goes dark.

Earthquake readiness

The Rose Canyon Fault runs through the San Diego area, so a server closet should never hold the only copy of anything. Off-site backups and a rehearsed recovery plan matter more than the rack itself.

Demanding industry clusters

Biotech and life sciences around Torrey Pines and Sorrento Valley, law firms Downtown, defense and maritime suppliers around the bay, and cross-border trade through Otay Mesa all answer to strict partners, insurers or regulators.

California privacy rules

If your business falls under the CCPA, as amended by the CPRA, California residents have rights over the personal information you hold. Knowing where that data lives and who can reach it makes those obligations far easier to meet.

We work on-site across the county and remotely everywhere else. See how on-site IT support across San Diego County works, from North County to the South Bay.

Comparison of Alpiba managed IT, break-fix IT and one in-house generalist across pricing, security monitoring, incident response, backups, compliance support and coverage. Alpiba offers flat per-user pricing, a 24/7 human SOC, under-15-minute first response and tested immutable backups.
Managed IT vs break-fix vs one in-house hire.

How flat per-user pricing and the first 90 days work

We price managed services per user, per month, at a flat rate. Your plan is scoped after a free 30-minute assessment, so the number reflects your real environment, and helpdesk tickets are unlimited, so a busy month of requests doesn't change the bill.

The main factors are how many people you support, the security and compliance scope you need and how many sites need hands-on help. There are no surprise line items.

  1. Free 30-minute assessment

We map your biggest risks and quick wins, with no obligation and no sales pressure.

  2. A flat per-user scope

You get one monthly price that reflects your people, your security needs and your sites.

  3. Onboarding and quick wins

We document your environment, close urgent gaps such as missing MFA, then roll out monitoring, EDR, email security and backups in tight windows with minimal disruption.

  4. Your first quarterly review

At the end of the first quarter we review risk, roadmap and budget together, with results from a test restore on the table.

The goal for the first 90 days is simple: every user protected by MFA and EDR, backups proven by a test restore and your environment documented. Exact timing depends on your size and what discovery turns up.

FAQ

Answers before you ask.

The questions we hear most from San Diego founders, operators and IT leaders exploring a managed partner.

What does Alpiba do?

Alpiba provides managed IT support and cybersecurity in San Diego for growing businesses. That covers the helpdesk and on-site help your team relies on, a human-staffed 24/7 SOC watching devices, sign-ins, email and cloud, Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace administration, network and server work, and immutable backups. One accountable team handles all of it for a flat per-user monthly price.

How is managed IT different from break-fix IT support?

Managed IT works to prevent problems for a predictable monthly fee, while break-fix IT charges by the hour once something has already gone wrong. A managed provider keeps watch, applies updates, secures accounts and devices, and supports your team every day. With break-fix, nobody watches between calls, costs spike during incidents and security tends to be nobody's job. Alpiba is a managed provider with flat per-user pricing and unlimited helpdesk tickets.

How quickly does Alpiba respond to a security incident?

Our human-staffed SOC averages under 15 minutes to first response, around the clock, for managed clients. If the event is ransomware or a breach, we trigger a documented containment playbook within the first hour, for example isolating an infected device or disabling a compromised account. You get plain-English updates on what happened, what we did and what comes next.

How does Alpiba protect a business from ransomware?

We stack defenses so one failure doesn't become a disaster. Managed EDR watches every laptop and server, email filtering and phishing training cut off a common entry point, MFA and zero-trust access protect accounts, and scheduled patching closes known holes. If something still gets through, our SOC runs a containment playbook within the first hour, and immutable backups tested every quarter give you a clean recovery point.

Can Alpiba help with SOC 2, HIPAA or cyber insurance requirements?

Yes. We design, implement and document the technical controls behind SOC 2 Type II readiness, HIPAA-aligned safeguards, NIST CSF mapping, ISO 27001 alignment and PCI DSS merchant readiness, and we keep the evidence organized for auditors and insurers. Independent auditors issue the reports, and HIPAA compliance remains your organization's responsibility, but we make showing your work far easier.

How is Alpiba's managed IT priced?

Alpiba charges a flat, per-user monthly price with no surprise line items. We scope it after a free 30-minute assessment, based mainly on how many people you support, the security and compliance scope you need and how many sites need hands-on help. Helpdesk tickets are unlimited, so a busy month doesn't raise your bill and budgeting stays simple as you grow.

What happens in the free 30-minute assessment?

In about 30 minutes we learn how your business runs, then map your biggest risks, a few quick wins and the outline of a right-sized IT and security roadmap. There is no obligation and no sales pressure. If working together makes sense, we follow up with a flat per-user scope built on what we learned, not a generic package.

Will Alpiba replace our in-house IT staff?

Only if you want us to. Alpiba can act as your full outsourced IT department, or work co-managed alongside the IT people you already have. In a co-managed setup your team stays in charge of daily priorities, and we take on round-the-clock security monitoring, deeper cloud and network work, and the nights, weekends and vacations one person can't cover.

What does zero-trust security mean for a small business?

Zero trust means no user or device is trusted automatically, even inside your office network. Every sign-in is checked against who the person is, the health of their device and the context, and people get only the access their role needs. For a small business, that mostly means MFA everywhere, conditional access and least-privilege admin rights, which we build into every environment we manage.

What security should a small business have in place in 2026?

At minimum, a small business needs MFA on every account, managed EDR on every laptop and server, email filtering with SPF, DKIM and DMARC, immutable off-site backups with tested restores, scheduled patching and regular phishing training. Add people watching alerts around the clock, because attacks often start after hours. Together, those controls also cover much of what cyber insurance questionnaires ask about.

Does Alpiba support Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace?

Yes. Our engineers are Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace certified, and we handle setup, migrations, security hardening and ongoing administration on both platforms. That includes conditional access and MFA in Microsoft 365, Google Workspace's 2-Step Verification and context-aware access, and migrations between the two, planned in tight windows so email keeps flowing.

Why choose a local provider for IT support and cybersecurity in San Diego?

A local provider can send an engineer when a problem has to be fixed at your site, and understands regional risks such as wildfire season, SDG&E power shutoffs and earthquakes. Alpiba is San Diego-based and works on-site across the county while supporting remote staff anywhere, so you get local knowledge without giving up 24/7 monitoring or senior engineers on the phone.
